Training

Washington University offers a number of training opportunities relevant to the development of digital projects. This page lists a sample of these offerings.


Training on Planning and Metadata

Washington University Libraries XML training
For several years, he Washington University Libraries presented free workshops on several aspects of XML annually (occasionally twice a year). These workshops grew year over year, and in the last years were opened up to anyone in the wider St. Louis community with interest (and recommended experience in markup languages such as HTML). The workshop was typically made up of four sessions on different XML standards and technologies. New workshops are planned for the fall of 2013.

Humanities Digital Workshop (HDW)
Since 2006, the HDW has offered a summer workshop for graduate and undergraduate students that combined training in digital humanities standards, tools and skills with a practicum on a digital project. HDW often offers small workshops on topics such as Python and text mining, and presentations by guest speakers.

School of Engineering and Applied Science: Center for the Application of Information Technology (CAIT)
In addition to providing training on software, CAIT offers training on XML, Usability, Testing, Design Architecture, and Project Management.


Training on Equipment

ARC Library Technology Center at the Olin Library
The Arc offers access and individual training on equipment available for digitizing images, such as a VHS to DVD deck and scanners with OCR capabilities.


Training on Software and Systems

ARC Library Technology Center at the Olin Library
The Arc regularly offers workshops and individual training on PC and Mac software that include Excel, Powerpoint, Adobe Photoshop, iPhoto, iMovie, and other software packages.

Department of Art History and Archaeology: Visual Resources Center
Provides individual training to members of the department on digital imaging and the content management system LUNA Insight.

GIS Online Tutorials
Through Washington University's ESRI site license, users have access to various Geographic Information System (GIS) tools, a geographic information system that allows users to analyze and present geographic data. Faculty, staff and students can sign-up for online GIS tutorials.

ITeach Symposium
A day long workshop for faculty and staff offered on alternate years on teaching with technology, organized by the Teaching Center, University Libraries and Arts & Sciences Teaching Lab.

School of Engineering and Applied Science: Center for the Application of Information Technology (CAIT)
CAIT provides workshops year-round for CAIT members and selected Washington University students on PHP, Unix, Linux, Java, Macromedia, Web development, and many other technical proficiencies.

The Teaching Center
A facility that provides faculty and staff with year-round training on multi-media instruction, links to online tutorials, and information on technology-integrated classroom design and resources.
