A Theatre For Voluptuous Wordlings: 1569
edition |
This section of the site contains the written texts of
A Theatre
and
Complaints in their entirety, including the lengthy prose
pieces that accompany
A Theatre but which are usually excluded
from

Complaints:
1595 edition |
collections of Spenser's poetry. (As noted in the
Introduction,
the prose pieces bear scrutiny because they greatly inflect the interpretation
of the poems included in the volume.) At the same time, the situation
of the translations included in
Complaints among other important
poems by Spenser allows the user to discern the manner in which these
translations foreground concerns that preoccupied Spenser throughout
his career. The transcriptions of
A Theatre and
Complaints
included here have been marked up in compliance with the protocols
established by the Text Encoding Initiative. The Early English Books
Online project has generously given us access to transcriptions of
the SGML mark-up that it has used to for digital rendering of the
texts included in its archive. We have used the transcriptions donated
by EEBO as the basis for our own mark-up by converting the original
SGML to XML tagging. We have also added tags in order to make the
texts more richly searchable.
